The month of June is not only Father’s Day, but it is also Men's Mental Health month. I figured it is an ideal time to touch on the naturopathic approach to men’s health. Naturopathic doctors focus on restoring and maintaining optimal health through holistic approaches that take in consideration the psychological, physical, and spiritual aspects of the patient. Read on for some important health tips you should consider all year round.

MEN’S HEALTH

Did you know many major health risks that men face such as:

  • heart disease

  • stroke

  • diabetes

  • cancer

  • benign prostate enlargement

  • depression

can all be prevented with diet, healthy lifestyle changes, regular medical check-ups, and screening tests. According to Harvard Health Publishing, "the average man pays less attention to his health than the average woman". Therefore, as a call to action, it is essential that your health becomes a priority; to improve endurance, stamina, longevity, and the quality of your life.

MENTAL HEALTH TIPS

Anxiety and depression for men often present as irritability and anger, avoidance of social activities and hobbies, changes in eating and sleep patterns, decrease sex drive, racing heartbeat, social anxiety, nervousness, and insomnia. Here are five tips you can start today. To support mental health eat foods high and B-vitamins, rich and essential fatty acids and adequate protein intake daily. Commit to 20 to 30 minutes of moderate exercise three times a week to improve mood and decreases anxiety. Build social connections with people that are supportive, positive, and open minded. See counseling to learn stress management techniques, and how to process emotions and life experiences in a healthy way.

HEART HEALTH TIPS

High cholesterol, systolic, hypertension, diabetes, and elevated cardiac CRP levels are indicators of vasoconstriction and inflammation in the cardiovascular vessels of the heart; leading to the development of heart disease, and possibly even kidney disease. The foundation of mitigating the risks of these conditions include:

  • adequate water intake

  • improving glucose

  • cholesterol metabolism

  • through aerobic

  • exercise and strength training

  • proper sleep cycles

  • high fiber, nutrient-dense diet

Always consult with your PCP regarding what exercise regime may be right for you and the appropriate amount of daily water intake to support your kidney health.

PROSTATE HEALTH TIPS

The prostate is a gland located under the bladder that plays an important role in the reproductive system of making semen. This glance surrounds part of the urethra where the urine empties from the bladder and semen is carried from the testicles. As you age the prostate enlarges and may become symptomatic after the age of 40 years. This can lead to difficulty in urination and ejaculation. To support the health of the prostate don’t skip annual healthcare exams. Some screening test may need start at the age of 40 due to your family history. Eat an anti-inflammatory diet that is rich in nuts, seeds, essential fatty acids and antioxidants. Also decrease your exposure to exogenous estrogen through plastics.

Taking a naturopathic approach to men’s health means addressing the whole person—mind, body, and lifestyle—not just managing symptoms. By prioritizing prevention, identifying root causes, and making sustainable changes, men can take an active role in their long-term vitality.
